Soft tissue sarcomas
Irradiation with IORT is useful in targeting the tumor site.
Tumors of muscles, connective tissues, blood vessels and lymphatics, nerves, ligaments and fatty tissue are classified as soft tissue sarcomas. The intent to reduce at minimum the extent of surgical demolition poses a great risk of relapse. Irradiation with IORT is useful in targeting the tumor site. Typically, the procedure involves an integrated approach which includes external beam radiotherapy on large volumes associated with chemotherapy and a IORT boost application delivered in a high dose (10-20 Gy). 25 clinical studies showed a local control equal to 55-82%, 15-18% of toxicity and a 5-year survival rate of 47-55%.
