Gastric cancer

Gastric cancer is one of the most promising candidates for treatment with IORT.

In Italy this type of cancer shows an incidence of 12,000 cases per year. Its occurrence has been significantly reduced thanks to prevention campaigns of public sensibilization.

The resection of the tumor at an early stage (mucosa and submucosa) ensures the survival of 90% of cases. Unfortunately, when the cancer is at an advanced stage, involving the lymph nodes, the survival rate falls to 10% due to a high risk of recurrency (40-90%).

A Japanese study conducted using the IORT technique in the treatment of II-stage III-IV gastric cancer patients, showed a 84% survival rate at 5 years compared to the 62% achieved without performing IORT on peripheral tumors of stage II, 62% with IORT vs. 37% in stage III and 15% vs 0% in stage IV.

Gastric cancer is one of the most promising candidates for treatment with IORT, because of the high risk of relapse. IORT can reduce this risk, improving the patient's quality of life and survival.
